The most common cases for terminating home insurance
A housing contract is signed for a period of one year. Upon expiration, corresponding to the anniversary date of its entry into force, it is renewed year after year. However, any insured person has the right to terminate the contract at the time of expiration without needing to provide a specific reason. To cancel home insurance in this way, it is sufficient to send a registered letter two months before the due date. Note that the insurer is obliged to send a letter 15 days before the deadline for this procedure (i.e., two and a half months). From the receipt of this letter, the insured has 20 days to respond. If the insurer does not send this letter, it is possible to terminate the home insurance at any time.
Another common case is a decision that necessarily involves the termination of a home insurance contract. The formalities are then very simple. It is enough to send a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt one month before leaving the premises, with the termination taking effect one month after receipt of the letter.

Other ways to proceed with home insurance termination
Since the enactment of the Hamon law on January 1, 2015, it is possible to cancel home insurance at any time after the expiration date of the first anniversary of the contract. In this case, which does not involve moving, it is mandatory to conclude a contract with another insurer. The latter will take care of all the procedures with the previous subscribing organization.
The termination of the home insurance contract can also occur in the event of a change in situation. Retirement, change of status or marital regime, job loss, or change of profession can be reasons for terminating the contract. To do this, a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt must be sent within three months following the change (with supporting documents), with the contract ending one month after the receipt of the letter. Finally, it is possible to proceed with home insurance termination in the event of increased risks (for example, the installation of a chimney) or a reduction of such risks (the final departure of children, the installation of a security door, the sale of the garage, etc.). Again, the termination will take effect one month after the insurer receives the letter.
