In the race for degrees, the winners are not necessarily those we believe. Because in the job market, some Bac +5 profiles face as many, if not more, difficulties than less qualified profiles in finding employment. Long training does not automatically guarantee, far from it, a more comfortable job search or a higher salary. It is therefore time to challenge the accepted ideas that push towards “more and more degrees”!

A mismatch problem between the skills of young graduates and the needs of companies Pragmatic, companies are certainly looking for potential, but especially in times of crisis, skills that match their needs, meaning employees who can be operational quickly. Unfortunately, in France, we suffer from too much mismatch between the skills and expectations of young graduates and the needs and requirements of companies. This gap is, in my opinion, one of the primary factors behind the extremely high unemployment rate among young people. Another notable consequence is that many graduates take on positions that do not match their qualifications and at a level below their skills. This is the case for 45% of Bac +4 according to Apec. The press recently echoed the case of a young graduate with a Master 2 in Biotechnology and Therapeutics, who, unemployed, joined Insee as an administrative assistant following a category C public service competition. Another example, experienced in the recruitment company I run: a young Bac +5 graduate in communication to whom I could only offer a hostess position… For those who discover late, after a long and demanding path, that their training and skills do not really match the demand of companies, the disappointment is great and sometimes difficult to manage psychologically.

Bac +2 more sought after than Bac +5 In this context, Bac +2 graduates are standing out, attracting the interest of employers sensitive to the candidate’s know-how and affinity with the business world. Especially since many jobs requiring Bac +2 training are in short supply: sales and commercial marketing, IT, bilingual management assistant, accounting, and paramedical professions. According to a study conducted by Afij, the Association for the Training and Employment of Young Graduates, 45% of employers wish to recruit only Bac +2/3 and only 12% Bac +5. The study also reveals that Bac +4 graduates are increasingly less sought after. It is therefore clear that a strategy of accumulating degrees is not necessarily relevant for accessing employment.
Reconnect our training system to the business world Given these challenges, it is urgent to reconnect our training system (and its guidance services) to the business world. A good step has been taken in this direction with the creation of professional bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the university. In the same vein, alternating training will often be preferred over advanced theoretical training. However, it is obviously not about launching training in literature, communication, sociology, etc. But it must unfortunately be recognized that these fields suffer from a greater number of candidates than job offers. I therefore advise young students to be realistic and prioritize the opportunities offered by their degree.
